The Lancaster Bible College Men's Volleyball team traveled to Arlington, Va. on Tuesday evening to face Marymount (Va.), falling in five sets 3-2 and seeing their six-game win streak come to an end. The Chargers fall to 17-7 overall and 4-0 in the United East, while the Saints improve to 10-13 overall and 3-1 in CVC play.
How it Happened:
The Chargers came out swinging as they raced to a 5-0 lead accented by a kill from senior
Dawson Forney, then the Saints worked back to tie the set at 7-7. The teams traded points before the Chargers went on a 5-1 run after several Saint errors helped them grab a 15-11 lead. The Chargers used several kills from sophomores
Carson Hoover and
Jordan Yoder to stay ahead, but Marymount (Va.) closed strong with six of the final eight points to storm back and take set one 25-23 at home.
The Chargers led early in set two with kills by Forney and Hoover, but the Saints took the lead 8-7 and kept it tied several times before a three-point spurt put them in front 13-11. The Chargers then rattled off four straight points, including a kill from Hoover and a service ace by Forney to reclaim the lead. A 6-1 run later in the set put the Chargers on top for good, led by Yoder landing back-to-back blocks and Hoover finishing the set with two kills to give LBC the 25-23 win and tie the match at one set apiece.
Both teams went on short runs early in the third set to keep things close, with sophomores
Kevin Bryant and
Jaiden Flanagan connecting on kills. Back-to-back kills by Forney and Hoover put LBC up 16-12, then another 6-1 run by the Chargers extended the lead to 22-14 as junior
Jake Rotelle landed a service ace in the middle of the run. A kill by Bryant ended the set 25-19 and put Lancaster Bible up 2-1 in the match.
Marymount (Va.) raced to an early lead after several short runs, but the Chargers wouldn't go away early as they brought the score to 11-10 after an ace by junior
Tyler Martin. The next 6-1 run belonged to the Saints as they pulled ahead, never looking back as they went on to take the set 25-19 and force a deciding fifth set in Arlington. It was all Saints early in set five as they led 6-2 after two kills and an ace, then going on a five-point run to end the Chargers' chances of a comeback in the set and winning 15-8 to steal the match at home.
