Softball Splits a Pair in Myrtle Beach

The Lancaster Bible College Softball team continued their trip in Myrtle Beach, S.C. at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic on Monday afternoon, going 1-1 on the day with an 11-8 loss to Mary Baldwin and an 8-3 win over Albion. The Chargers move to 3-1 overall after four games.

Game 1: vs Mary Baldwin (8-11 Loss)

How it Happened:
The Fighting Squirrels and Chargers traded blows early, with each team scoring a run in the first and second innings. Freshman Maggie Kwiatkowski scored the Chargers' first run on an error, then in the second sophomore Riley Danko hit a single to center field to score senior Kylee Cole, tying the game at 2-2. Mary Baldwin plated two runs on three hits in the third inning to take the lead, but junior Maddison Atkins responded with a lead-off triple in the bottom of the inning, setting her up to score on a groundout by freshman Ila Rowatti.

Mary Baldwin extended the lead to 6-3 after two fourth-inning runs, then the Chargers had their biggest scoring inning of the game with four runs in response. The Chargers loaded the bases with one out before Atkins singled to left field to drive in a run, then an error allowed two more LBC baserunners to score to tie the game up at six. Rowatti followed this with a RBI-single to score Atkins, giving the Chargers their first lead of the game at 7-6.

The Fighting Squirrels tied it back up in the fifth, then scored another in the sixth to reclaim the lead. It was Atkins once again who came through for the Chargers, reaching on a fielder's choice to score Kwiatkowski and tie the game for the fifth time on the day. Mary Baldwin was able to pull away in the seventh inning with three runs, forcing a 1-2-3 inning for LBC to wrap up the win for Mary Baldwin.

By the Numbers:
- The Chargers plated eight runs on 12x hits but committed a season-high five errors, while the Fighting Squirrels scored 11 runs on 14 hits with four errors in the field
- Maggie Kwiatkowski went 3-3 on the day with a walk and three runs scored
- Sophomore Alyssa Taylor and Maddison Atkins each went 2-4, with Atkins driving in two runs
- Atkins held down the circle for the Chargers, allowing just four earned runs on 13 hits in seven innings pitched

Information to Know:
The Chargers have reached 10+ hits in five consecutive games dating back to last season, winning three of those five games. Maggie Kwiatkowski had her first career 3-hit game against Mary Baldwin.
Game 2: vs Albion (8-3 Win)

How it Happened:
The Britons struck first with a RBI-double in the first inning, but the Chargers responded in the bottom frame as Maddison Atkins drove in Maggie Kwiatkowski on a single to tie it at 1-1. It was Albion who took the next lead, scoring on a sacrifice fly and using a home run by Lilly Zaskowski to take the lead 3-1. The Chargers' next run came in the fifth inning as Kwiatkowski hit her first career triple, driving in junior Amanda Hoover to cut the lead to 3-2.

In a final blow, the Chargers stormed past the Britons with a six-run sixth inning, featuring four hits and three errors by the defense. Graduate student Phoebe Clemens scored on a single from Atkins to tie the score, then Hoover connected on a 2-run double for her first RBI of the season, putting the Chargers ahead 5-3. Freshman Danielle Wilson then got her first career hit and RBI on a single that scored two runners, then Wilson scored on a RBI-single by freshman Carissa Mulder, her first career hit and RBI to put the Chargers up 8-3. The defense finished off the effort with three flyouts to close out win number three of the season.

By the Numbers:
- The Chargers scored eight runs on eight hits with just one error, while the Britons scored three runs on eight hits and three errors
- Amanda Hoover went 2-2 for the Chargers with two RBI and two runs scored
- Maddison Atkins and Maggie Kwiatkowski each added two hits and a run scored
- Riley Danko (W, 2-0) pitched a complete game for the Chargers, letting up just two earned runs on eight hits and striking out five

Information to Know:
This is the Chargers' best start to a season (3-1) as a NCAA Division III program, scoring 8+ runs in all four games. At the halfway point of their Myrtle Beach trip, the Chargers are hitting .387 as a team with 46 hits and 16 stolen bases.
