The Lancaster Bible College Men's Basketball team played in front of their home crowd on Saturday night as they took on Cairn in a United East battle, falling by a score of 91-87 in a tightly contested game. The Chargers drop to 16-5 overall and 8-1 in the United East while the Highlanders improve to 16-6 overall and 8-2 in the United East.
** During halftime, LBC Athletics took time to commemorate and recognize the 2015-16 Men's Basketball team as this season marks 10 years since they finished an undefeated regular season at 27-0 and claimed the program's first-ever conference title, winning the NEAC at home on February 28, 2016. This was the Chargers' first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in Men's Basketball and only undefeated conference season, going 18-0 in NEAC play.
How it Happened:
After four combined turnovers in the first minute and a Cairn bucket, the Chargers got on the board as
Bennett Bowers (So.) hit a 3-pointer from the corner. A minute later,
Connor Storr (Jr.) knocked down a three then another just under four minutes into the game before
Nile Austin (Sr.) drove for a score for a Cairn timeout down 13-4. Storr then hit another three out of the timeout, then an and-one layup from
Camden Hurst (Jr.) saw the lead get back to nine on the three-point play at 19-10.
Reaves Hooks (Sr.) drove for a layup for an eight-point lead, then the Highlanders held LBC scoreless for over three minutes as they stormed ahead to a 26-23 lead with 11 straight points. The lead then swung back and forth as Hurst hit a three and
Tyshaun Pulley drove for a tough score, but Cairn scored the final five points of the half to lead at halftime 38-36 over the Chargers.
Storr started the second half with a layup to tie the score, then
Daniel King (Jr.) got a layup to fall a minute later to tie it again at 40. With the score tied at 43, a press by the Chargers resulted in a steal and a loud dunk in transition by Hurst, putting LBC up two. Hurst then got a contested jumper to go, then Hooks sank a pair of free throws for LBC's largest lead of the half at 51-45.
Jacob Lewis (Fr.) kept the lead at six with a layup off a steal, but Cairn got two 3-pointers to fall as they swung ahead 56-55. Storr answered with another three, but another pair of threes by the Highlanders got them back up by one. Cairn burst into a huge lead with a 10-point run in less than two minutes, then got the lead up to a dozen at 78-66 with 5:25 remaining. The Chargers chipped it away to six within the minute as
Tyshaun Pulley (Sr.) hit a three, then Lewis made it five on a layup. Storr made a pair of buckets to get the lead down to three with 2:31 to go, but a five-point run by Cairn gave them enough separation to close the game as they took the 91-87 victory in front of a raucous crowd in the HAC.
