Baseball Takes on Wildcats on the Road

The Lancaster Bible College Baseball team resumed action on Saturday afternoon as they traveled to face Penn College in a non-conference double-header, winning game one 9-2 before falling in game two 12-3. The Chargers move to 2-2 overall while the Wildcats began their season at 1-1 overall.
 
Game 1: 9-2 Win (7 inn.)
 
How it Happened:
The teams combined for three hits but no score through the first two innings, then the Chargers opened the scoring in the top of the 3rd in a big way as the bases were loaded for Nate Rosenzweig (Jr.), who blasted a grand slam for four RBI and a Chargers lead. The Wildcats got on the board with one in the 4th inning, then the Chargers quickly got two more in the 5th as Shane Stephan (Jr.) and Evan Sareyka (Sr.) hit back-to-back home runs with one out to extend the lead to 6-1. After another Penn College run in the 6th, then in the top of the 7th Sareyka added another RBI on a sacrifice fly to make it 7-2. With two outs in the inning and the bases loaded, Joey Stein (So.) hit a single to drive in two runs as an error got another to go, helping LBC close out a 9-2 victory on the road.
 
By the Numbers:
- The Chargers had nine runs on nine hits with no errors while the Wildcats had two runs on eight hits and committed three errors
- Nate Rosenzweig led the Chargers with two hits and four RBI on his grand slam
- Shane Stephan went 2-3 with a solo home run and three runs scored
- Evan Sareyka added two RBI with a home run and a RBI-sac fly
- Tanner Smith and Alex Fox (Fr.) each got their first hits in a Charger uniform
- Noah Robinette (W, 1-0) picked up the win on the mound, throwing 4.0 innings with five hits allowed and just one earned run, walking two with one strikeout
- The Wildcats were led by Jaydon Goebel with two hits and two RBI
 Game 2: 3-12 Loss (7 inn.)
 
How it Happened:
The Chargers struck first as Evan Sareyka grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Dylan Witkowski (Sr.), then the Wildcats matched with one in the bottom of the 1st. The Chargers retook the lead in the top of the 2nd as CJ Peterson (So.) roped a RBI-single to left field, but the Wildcats answered with two runs in the bottom frame including an error by the Chargers to take the lead 3-2. Penn College blew it open from there, adding three more runs in the 4th and then six total runs in the 5th as they led by double-digits. The Chargers mustered one more run in the top of the 7th off a RBI-single by Joey Stein, but ultimately fell 12-3 to come to a double-header split.
 
By the Numbers:
- The Chargers scored three runs on six hits but committed three errors, while the Wildcats had 12 runs off 12 hits with no errors
- Evan Sareyka led the Chargers as he batted 2-3 with a walk and two RBI
- Shane Stephan (Jr.) recorded two hits with a run scored
- Tanner Smith recorded two RBI with two runs scored
- On the mound, six Chargers pitched for the game, starting with 1.0 inning by Trey Luminella (Fr.), with two other players in Trevor Bertsch (Fr.) (L, 0-1) and Gabe Reif (Fr.) each getting their first action in a LBC uniform
- The Wildcats were led by Shawn Townsend on a 3-5 game with two RBI and two runs scored
 
Information to Know:
The Chargers move to 12-18 all-time against Penn College and had their five-game winning streak against the Wildcats snapped in the second game. The Chargers and Wildcats both compete in the United East Conference for Baseball but do not face each other in conference play this season.
 
Up Next:
The Chargers are slated to host Wilson for their first home game of the season on Tuesday, March 3 at 2:00 p.m. but the game is subject to change.
