The Lancaster Bible College Women's Volleyball team made the long trip south to St. Mary's (Md.) on Wednesday night for their first road conference match, losing by a score of 3-1. The Chargers drop to 4-6 overall and 1-1 in the United East while the Seahawks improve to 10-5 overall and 2-0 in the United East.
How it Happened:
After the Seahawks earned the first two points, Lancaster Bible went on a four-point run that featured a kill and a block by
Lea Sareyka (Sr.) and a service ace by
Maggie Kwiatkowski (Jr.). The Chargers then scored five in a row behind two aces by
Tessa Kwiatkowski (Sr.), extending the lead to 9-3 and forcing a Seahawks timeout. St. Mary's (Md.) responded with six straight points out of the timeout to tie it up, but Sareyka ended the run with a strong kill. The Seahawks controlled the middle of the set as they swung ahead 18-14, but the Chargers had late momentum with four straight points to force a timeout by St. Mary's (Md.) before they closed out the set 25-21.
Jessica Fletcher (Sr.) landed a service ace for a 3-1 LBC lead early in set two, then kills from
Samantha Hey (So.) and Sareyka made the lead 5-2 for the Chargers.
Kaitlyn Weitzel (Jr.) had an ace to cap a three-point spurt for a 10-5 advantage, then after three straight Seahawk points, Hey smashed a kill to end the run. The teams then went back and forth until a pair of Seahawk errors got LBC to a 17-13 advantage, but St. Mary's (Md.) fought back to tie the set at 18-18 as the Chargers called a timeout. Fletcher threw down a solo block to get LBC to 20 points, then
Maggie Kwiatkowski had another ace for a 23-20 Chargers lead and another SMCM timeout. A third ace from Maggie iced the set 25-20 to help LBC tie up the match at one set apiece.
After a 2-0 Seahawks start in set three, a kill and a block from Sareyka tied it up at 3-3.
Eden Belford (Sr.) knocked a kill, then
Chloe Belford (Sr.) landed a solo block to put LBC up 6-5. The Seahawks won five of the next six to take the lead, but three straight kills from Hey, Fletcher, and
Eden Belford helped LBC tie the set at 11-11. Some LBC miscues gave St. Mary's (Md.) a five-point swing before
Eden Belford ended the run on a kill, then she had another with Fletcher adding an ace to cut the lead to two. The Seahawks built their lead to six, but the Chargers put together a late run as Fletcher had a kill and a block to cut it to 23-20. The Seahawks won the final two points to close out set three 25-20 and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Chargers got in an early 5-1 hole in set four before Stenberg had a kill, then Fletcher had a kill to make the score 7-4. Later in the set,
Chloe Belford and
Chloe Stenberg had back-to-back kills as LBC cut the lead to 13-10, but the Seahawks built it back up to six points before a Sareyka kill. The Seahawks never let the Chargers within three in the fourth set, hanging on to take it 25-20 and take down Lancaster Bible in St. Mary's City.
