Allentown, PA- This weekend, the Chargers finished in last place at Cedar Crest College's Falcon Classic Tip-off Tournament. On Saturday, the Chargers lost to host Cedar Crest 82-56 in the first round. In the consolation game, Sunday, the Chargers lost a nail biter to Bay Path 57-56.
Poor shooting proved to be the achilles heel for the Chargers over the weekend. Lancaster shot a dismal 35.9 percent from the field and an even worse 27.8 from behind the arc, while allowing their opponents to shoot 45.5 percent.
On Saturday, the Cedar Crest Falcons took an early 15-6 lead with 5 minutes gone in the first half. Over the eight and half minutes the Chargers cut the deficit to three, 27-24. The Falcons outscored the Chargers by fifteen to end the half up 48-30.
The second stanza proved to be more of the same, with the Chargers never able to get the deficit under 16 points. Liz Saunderhaus led the way for the Falcons with 31 points with an impressive 11-12 shooting. For the Chargers, Nicole Karshner (Galeton, PA) led the team with 12 points on 5-17 shooting. In her college debut, Cindy Blough (Johnstown, PA) shot 5-10 from the field for 10 points.
In the consolation game, once again the Chargers found themselves down early, 14-4. This time the Chargers were able to answer outscoring their opponents 13-2 over the next five and a half minutes to take the lead 17-16. With the exception of a couple seconds midway through the second half, Lancaster would hold the lead until late in the game. With six seconds on the clock Bay Path's Ashley Cimmino converted a Charger turnover to the game winning lay-up. With only six seconds on the clock, the ladies were unable to muster any late game heroics.
Kelly Long topped the scoring column for the Chargers with 13 points. Sophomores Nicole Karshner and Christine Maher (Westminster, MD) both logged double doubles, Karshner with 11 points, 11 rebounds and Maher with 12 and 10.
The Chargers return to action Friday at the Penn State Harrisburg Tip-Off Tournament starting at 6:00 pm.
