Lancaster, PA- The Chargers shocked the NCAA II Pioneers of Columbia Union College 2-1 on Thursday afternoon. On paper, the game could have been a land slide in Columbia Union's favor. The Pioneers, though more talented, did not control the game until the last 25 minutes. However, it would prove to be the proverbial “too little too late.”
Though the Chargers were outshot 25-4 for the game, as well as being under pressure late in the second half, the men's team hung tough for the first 55 minutes. They were able to capitalize on their few opportunities and make it stick. In fact, the only stat column that Lancaster held advantage was the score, but it was the most important stat of the day. The Chargers win marks the team's 12th of the season and 3rd in their last four.
Cory Greiser (Quakertown, PA) scored his team leading 15th goal of the season to break the 0-0 tie in the 33rd minute off an assist from goalkeeper Jake Kreider (Annville, PA). Kreider in addition to having his first career assist played a great game in goal logging 13 saves.
Just 3 minutes into the second half the Chargers added an insurance goal. Kevin Keltner (Menomonee, WI) played the ball ahead to Kyle Zook (Lancaster, PA) who crossed the ball for a beautiful header from Zach Kraehmer (Newburgh, NY) that found the back of the side net. The last 25 minutes of the game were played in the Chargers defensive end. Columbia Union peppered shots on goal and finally poked one through with 7 minutes to go, but that is where the comeback stalled for the Pioneers.
The Chargers return to action 1:00 pm Saturday when they face Gallaudet University at home.
