Lartey Leads Chargers Past Penn State-Harrisburg

Word got around to sophomore Lawrence Lartey this week that maybe he wasn't creative enough and strong enough to lead Lancaster Bible College's men's soccer team. They should have watched him Thursday afternoon.

Lawrence scored twice, including the game winner with 21 minutes to go, to lead the Chargers (8-3) past Penn State-Harrisburg 3-2. Lartey's first goal came on a great pass by sophomore Cory Greiser just 3:55 into the match. His second was, as Head Coach Josh Beers said at the time, "scored by Lartey and assisted by Lartey and Lartey."

Lartey carried the ball through multiple defenders and stepped to his right before cutting the ball back past PSU-Harrisburg goalkeeper Toan Ngo.

"The coaching staff told me to be a bit more selfish and look for good shots," Lartey said. "I heard this week that I wasn't very creative the last couple of games and that really lit a fire under me this week at practice."

Trailing 2-1 at the half, Beers was happy to see his squad play with urgency in the second half, but still wants to see more of that before they are down or are winning.

"We need to learn to play with that type of urgency and energy the whole time," Beers said.

Beers was also impressed with the way his leaders played Thursday.

"When Lartey turns and attacks as he did today, we are a different team," Beers said. "Also give credit to Kevin Keltner who played great at sweeper today. He's a big part of why we won today."

Beers was also proud of the way his freshman played Thursday.

"Sean Westerlund played great today," Beers said. "He did a lot of great things that won't show up in the box score."

Thursday's game was LBC's eighth straight home match. They will take to the road for the next three. They finished the homestand 6-2 and outscored their opponents 25-12.

The Chargers face Albright on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Reading.
