Bring on the playoffs.
The Lancaster Bible College men's soccer team wrapped up its regular season Tuesday, defeating Davis College 3-0 in Johnson City, New York. The Chargers finished the regular season with a record of 13-6. The 13 wins matches their total from last season when they finished 13-6-1.
Tuesday's win didn't come easy however. The game was tied 0-0 at halftime and Head Coach Josh Beers thought it was time for a few changes. The biggest was putting sophomore goalkeeper
Grant Lockard in at forward. It paid off four minutes later.
Lockard scored from the center of the box at the 49th minute to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead.
"Just a big goal from Grant," Beers said. "We put him in because of his energy and leadership and he came through."
It remained a one-goal game until the 72nd minute when freshman
Zach Kutz scored off a rebound.
Lawrence Lartey was credited with the assist. Fellow freshman
Sean Westerlund put the game away in the 85th minute when he took a pass from Lartey and put it by the Davis goalkeeper. The assist was Lartey's 14th of the season.
One of the keys to the match was shutting down Davis' forwards. Freshman
Richard Westerlund did just that.
"Richie played shut down defense the entire game for us," Beers said.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Jake Kreider made three saves for his second straight shutout. He hasn't allowed a goal in 218 minutes.
LBC also got a boost from juniors
Kevin Keltner and
Kyle Zook who returned from sickness and injury.
"We got a great effort from Keltner today," Beers said. "He's not 100% and gave everything he had."
With the regular season now in the books, Beers and the Charges are looking towards the playoffs.
"The second season starts now and it's win or go home," Beers said. "We are looking forward to the challenge."
LBC will host Valley Forge Christian College on Tuesday in the NCCAA East Region Semi-Finals. Game time is yet to be determined.
