The last match of the season provided the Lancaster Bible College women's tennis team one more opportunity to show how far they have come this season. They took advantage of it.
While the score shows a shutout, 9-0, it doesn't come close to telling the whole story. Junior Roxy Ghaziaskar, down 6-2, 4-0, came roaring back to tie the second set at 4-4 before falling 6-4 to Kean's Lisette LaForge. Fellow junior
Kelsey Scott battled through a back injury to play both doubles and singles, while her sister Kayla fought through an ankle sprain.
"The ladies showed the kind of fight and determination we have been talking about all season long," Charger Head Coach
Zach Freeman said. "They could have rolled over and simply come along for the ride today, but instead, they fought and didn't make it easy on Kean."
Freeman was especially impressed with Ghaziaskar's performance.
"She stayed with LaForge the whole way through," Freeman said. "I looked up and it was 4-0 and then I blinked and it was 4-4. She hit some great shots and ran down a lot of balls that most players simply don't get to."
While the Chargers finished 1-12 on the year, Freeman was generally pleased with how the season turned out.
"There are things we will address in the coming months, but the fact is they are a great group of ladies and I am happy with how they have improved, both on the court and in life," Freeman said.
While the women's team has played all of their matches in the fall the past two seasons, they will take to the court this coming spring for four matches. They will travel with the men to Juniata, Ramapo and Goucher, before hosting Baptist Bible in 2010.
"It's nice that we can have both the men and women play in the spring," Freeman said. "We will probably be doing it this way from now on and frankly, to be competitive with other teams, we need to be playing both season."
The full 2010 men's and women's tennis scheule will be posted later this fall.
