We Meet Again

Chargers and Crimson Eagles Battle for East Region Crown

Both Philadelphia Biblical University and Lancaster Bible College knew they would play each other again this season. After PBU's 2-1 win over LBC on September 26, both teams were quoted as saying they would see each other in the East Regional Final. With the Crimson Eagles' 6-1 win over Davis and LBC's 3-0 triumph over Valley Forge Christian in the semi-finals, both teams have gotten their wish.

Facing each other in the finals for the third consecutive season (PBU has won the previous two meetings), both teams think the pressure of this game is on the other guy. Charger Head Coach Josh Beers believes his team is the underdog and PBU should be feeling the pressure of winning at home.

"We like the underdog role," Beers said. "We've never won a regional championship and they are gunning for their fifth straight title."

PBU Head Coach Clay Roberts said his team doesn't feel any pressure, rather they simply know the importance of the game.

"We know what this game means and we are focused," Roberts said. "I think there is pressure on Lancaster Bible. They've been ranked above us for most of the year and I think they have the pressure of living up to that ranking."

While both teams feel the pressure is on the other squad, both teams still remain very confident in the way they play.

"We feel that if we play like we are capable of, we will win," Roberts said.

Beers said he squad is confident because they have gone to PBU and won there.

"We know we can beat them there, we did it last season," Beers said. "We are confident on the road."

The Chargers are 7-3 on the road this season, while the Crimson Eagles are 5-5-1 in Langhorne in 2009.

Earlier this season, PBU (7-10-2) shut down the Chargers' top scorers in their 2-1 victory. Cory Greiser and Lawrence Lartey managed just three shots on goal and were held off the scoresheet.

"Our approach will be the same," Roberts said. "We feel like we have a good read on them. We need to contain their firepower and wait for them to make mistakes."

The Chargers (14-6) have not had as much success in shutting down PBU's big guns. Senior Phil Haas has scored four goals in his last two games against LBC.

"We are going to show them some different looks and try to mix things up a bit," Beers said. "Haas is playing great and as a coach it's nice to see him playing so well. Our job is to make sure he doesn't do it against us though."

Beers is hoping his young guys can stay relaxed as opposed to coming out tight like they did against Valley Forge.

"The big question is how our young guys will respond on Friday," Beers said. "We have talked about embracing the moment and not fearing it."

Roberts believes his team is feeling good despite an up-and-down season.

"We are peaking at the right time," Roberts said. "We are finding our legs and feeling good about ourselves."

As was the case in September, both coaches agree that Friday's final will be another great chapter in the LBC-PBU rivalry.

"It's going to be a great game no matter what," Roberts said. "It's another big game and we feel we can win it."

"We are excited for the opportunity to play them again," Beers said. "We will have to give more than we gave on Wednesday and we have to play better than we played against them in September."
