Chargers Drop Heartbreaker to Southeastern in NCCAA Quarter-finals

Facing adversity is something all good teams must do during the course of a season. Unfortunately for the Lancaster Bible College men's soccer team, it came in their National Quarter-final match against Southeastern Friday night in Kissimmee, Florida.

Up 2-0 with 20 minutes remaining, Charger sophomore Lawrence Lartey received his second yellow card of the match on a questionable call. He was given a red card and the Chargers were forced to play a man down for the rest of the match. The Fire wasted little time in taking advantage of playing a man up and scored five minutes later to cut the LBC lead to one. Six minutes later, they tied it 2-2.

LBC (15-7) had a quality chance to score late in regulation, but couldn't capitalize and the game headed to overtime.

Still playing a man up, Southeastern scored three minutes into overtime, effectively ending the Chargers' run to a national title.

"I am proud of the guys," Charger Head Coach Josh Beers said. "We faced a lot of adversity tonight, but we didn't run from it, we embraced it and that is something we have talked about all season long."

Freshman Sean Westerlund scored LBC's first goal, shortly after he was inserted into the match in the second half.

"Sean provided a great spark for us tonight," Beers said.

Junior Zak Kraehmer scored six minutes later to give the Chargers their 2-0 lead.

"Kraehmer had a great game," Beers said. "He and Kevin Keltner did a great job on the defensive end for us."

While the score didn't favor the Chargers, Beers said the loss and the game itself are a step forward for the program.

"We fell short on the scoreboard, but we can take a lot from this game and use it both on the soccer field and off," Beers said.

While the loss ends LBC's shot at a national championship, they will still play two more games and could place as high as third. They will face Southwestern Christian Saturday at 5:00 p.m.

Southeastern moves on to face Providence in Saturday's National Semi-final at 7:30 p.m.
