Chargers Breeze by Patriots

With the biggest game of the season just five days away, it would have been very easy for the Lancaster Bible College men's soccer team to overlook Valley Forge Christian on Monday afternoon. They didn't.

The Chargers scored three goals in five minutes in the first half and dominated their way to a 4-0 win over the Patriots.

Kevin Keltner, Jesse Fraser and Jordan Westphal scored the three quick goals that helped the Chargers to the win. Zach Kutz scored the other LBC (7-2) goal with two minutes to go in the first half. Kutz, taking the corner kick, bent the ball on his cross into the box and the ball found its way into the net.

Goalkeepers Jake Kreider, Grant Lockard and Tim Landis combined for the shutout.

"I am very pleased with the shutout," Charger Head Coach Josh Beers said. "We easily could've looked ahead to Saturday and we didn't, I'm very proud of how we played."

The Chargers held a 24-7 advantage in shots, as well as having 12 corners to the Patriots one.

"We were very unselfish with the ball today and that is very critical to our success," Beers said.

Cory Greiser and Lawrence Lartey each added two assists. Greiser's second assist came on Westphal's goal that put the game out of reach.

"I made a delayed run and waited for Greiser's pass," Westphal said. "I wasn't really marked, so I just waited and got a great pass."

Westphal was also happy the way the team came out and competed.

"It was very important for us to come out strong and not overlook them," Westphal said. "This was a good win."

Beers was pleased that so many of his players could get valuable playing time.

"We need guys off the bench to contribute," Beers said. "That is going to be very important later this season."

After playing three games in four days, the Chargers will get some rest before hosting Philadelphia Biblical on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in a rematch of last season's NCCAA East Regional Final in which the Crimson Hawks defeated LBC 3-2.

LBC enters the match ranked fourth in the country in the latest NCCAA Division II Poll. PBU is ranked fifth.
