In boxing, when you have your opponent on the ropes, you don't jab, you go for the knockout. On Saturday, the Lancaster Bible College men's soccer team had Philadelphia Biblical University on the ropes. Leading 1-0 at the half, an early second half goal would have gone a long way for the Chargers. Instead of going for the knockout, they jabbed and it cost them.
Phil Haas' two second half goals, the last with just over seven minutes to play, powered the Crimson Eagles to a road victory over the Chargers (7-3) on Homecoming.
"Those first 25 minutes of the second half, we should have been punching and pushing forward," Charger Head Coach Josh Beers said. "Instead, we jabbed and it cost us."
Charger junior
Kyle Zook opened the scoring 14 minutes into the contest on a great pass from junior
Zak Kraehmer. The rest of the first half went back and forth with the Crimson Eagles getting multiple scoring chances that were turned away by LBC sophomore goalkeeper
Jake Kreider.
The Crimson Eagle (4-4-1) physical play began to wear on the Chargers early in the second half.
"They were more physical and more hungry than us," Beers said. "Their big players made big plays today."
Charger co-captain
Kevin Keltner agreed with Beers.
"They wanted it more and we have to learn from this game," Keltner said.
PBU's attacking style in the second half finally caught up to the Chargers when Haas scored at the 68-minute mark.
"We were confident in our approach and waited for it to pay off," Crimson Eagle Head Coach Clay Roberts said.
Roberts agreed with Beers that they were the hungrier team on the field.
"Our guys deserved the win," Roberts said. "We stayed within the game and it was a total team effort today."
One thing that wasn't lost on either team was that this was probably not the last time these two teams will see each other this season.
"We still have to work hard," Haas said. "We will be seeing them again the [NCCAA] East Regional Finals."
Beers said there are still things LBC needs to work on before meeting PBU again.
"We still have concerns on the defensive end and before we take that next step, we have to fix that," Beers said.
The Chargers will look to rebound on Thursday when they host Penn State-Harrisburg at 5:00 p.m.
