Lancaster Bible College senior
Carl Edwards scored his 1,000th point in the first half of Saturday's game against St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) as the Chargers won for the third time in four games, 80-61.
Edwards' lay-up with 6:13 remaining in the opening half, gave him 1,001 points in his collegiate career.
"Coach [Pete] Beers and coach [Zack] Long pushed me hard to start making more of my lay-ups this season and I'm happy to say my 1,000th point came from a lay-up," Edwards said.
Edwards who was not aware he was that close to 1,000 points said he just tries to work hard each time he takes the floor.
"I did not even score 1,000 points in high school," Edwards said. "This certainly was not one of my goals when I walked through the door four years ago."
Edwards said he wanted to keep things simple today after making mistakes in his last couple of games.
"Today I just wanted to work hard and limit my mistakes," Edwards said. "I wanted to correct my problems and support my teammates."
For the game, Edwards had 21 points, 14 rebounds and four steals.
"I feel great for Carl," Charger Head Coach
Pete Beers said. "He played very well today and this is a big accomplishment for him."
LBC (8-10) opened the game on a 15-4 run in the first seven minutes of the game and never looked back. Leading 41-25 at the half, the Chargers shot 46.9 percent in the opening half and connected on six of their twelve three-point attempts.
"We got great looks all day," Beers said. "I thought we ran the offense and moved the ball very well today."
Brothers
Keith Keltner and
Kevin Keltner each added 14 points and four assists in the victory. Junior
Eric Nulf had his second straight double-digit game, scoring 12 points.
"Nulf gave us some valuable minutes today," Beers said. "I thought
Kyle Keltner and
Jake Clemenson were also key contributors today and provided a good spark for our team."
With just one game on the schedule next week (home against Penn State-Harrisburg), the Chargers are hoping to fine-tune some things as they head into the home stretch.
"We have some things to work on before Wednesday and this is the point in the season when hopefully we are up to the challenge of facing a good team like Penn State-Harrisburg," Beers said. "Our next two opponents are very good and this gives us a chance to show how far we have come this season."
LBC hosts the Nittany Lions on Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. at Horst Athletic Center.
