Leading by three with 38 seconds to go with their best free throw shooter on the line, the Lancaster Bible College men's basketball team liked its chances to squeak out an ugly win against Kentucky Christian. Two misses and two quick buckets later, the Knights walked out of Horst Athletic Center with a 61-60 victory.
Katlin Haney's bucket with 15 seconds to go put the Knights up by one. LBC's
Kevin Keltner created a shot for himself with four seconds to go that went in-and-out. KCU gave the Chargers a last ditch effort after missing two free throws, but
Eric Nulf's halfcourt shot missed as the buzzer sounded.
"This loss stings," Charger Head Coach
Pete Beers said. "We had a decent team on the ropes and couldn't bury them. Give credit to their resiliance."
Blandon Clemmons led the Knights (8-6) with 15 points. He had several clutch baskets in the second half. Cedomir Ilic also had a big game for KCU, scoring 14 points and grabbing 15 rebounds.
Cedomir's brother Svetomir chipped in with 13 points and six rebounds.
The Chargers (5-7) were led by senior
Carl Edwards who had a season-high 23 points and pulled down eight rebounds. He was also 9-for-11 from the free-throw line.
"Carl played a strong game tonight," Beers said. "He shot very well from the free-throw line."
Kevin Keltner added 14 points, five rebounds and four assists for the Chargers, who have dropped two straight games after winning four of their previous five.
"We got shots that we wanted and limited their shots, but we did not do a good job on the boards tonight, especially at the end of the game," Beers said.
Though the loss is painful, Beers is hopefull these types of games will only make the team stronger.
"It's a good thing that it's the beginning of January, hopefully in a month the mistakes we made tonight won't happen," Beers said.
The Chargers are back in action on Monday when they head to Cresson, Pa. to take on Mount Aloysius at 8:00 p.m.
