For the fourth time this season, the Lancaster Bible College women's tennis team avenged a loss from the 2009 season. The Chargers defeated William Paterson, 5-4 on Monday in Wayne, N.J. after losing, 7-2 last season.
Nicole Karschner and
Kelsey Scott led LBC as both got wins in doubles and singles. Karschner and
Bri Funk won their flight one doubles match, 9-7 after being down, 5-2. Scott and
Carolyn Kensinger won their flight two doubles match in a tie-breaker, 9-8 (7-4).
Kayla Scott and
Becky Griffes got their first win of the season in their flight three doubles match with an 8-5 win.
"The ladies played great today during the doubles' matches," LBC Head Coach
Zach Freeman said. "We have only swept doubles once before and it really gave the team a boost."
The boost did not last long as the host Pioneers battled back to tie the match at 4-4. After Karschner won at flight one singles, the next four matches went the way of William Paterson.
Kelsey Scott held off her opponent in her flight five singles' match and gave the Chargers the win, 5-4. Scott won, 6-4, 6-4.
While the ladies shook hands at the net, a large bolt of lightning streaked across the sky and rain began to fall from the sky.
"The match was so back-and-forth, I think even the sky was nervous and tense so it let out some lightning and rain," Freeman said laughing. "I know I was nervous, so maybe the lightning was for me and the team."
The Chargers, now 5-5 this season, return to the court on Wednesday when they take on Immaculata at 3:00 p.m.
