The Lancaster Bible College men's soccer team defeated Christendom, 1-0 on Saturday for their fifth straight victory. The five straight victories is tied for second all-time in team history.
Sean Westerlund scored in the 48th minute off a pass from
Lawrence Lartey and goalkeeper
Jarrod Bergey and the Chargers' defense made it stand up the rest of the way. Bergey made three saves to earn his first shutout as a member of the Chargers.
"I am very happy about the shutout," LBC Head Coach Josh Beers said. "I would have liked to see us score a couple of more times, but we played pretty well."
Westerlund's goal gives him five for the year, which ties him with
Cory Greiser for the team lead.
"It was good to see Sean score again," Beers said. "He is really giving us a spark when he enters the game."
After both teams had chances in the first half to score, Beers and the Chargers made an adjustment at halftime to limit the Crusaders' scoring chances.
"We made some adjustments at the half and controlled the ball a lot more in the second half," Beers said. "It was a gritty win, not a pretty win."
Only three LBC teams have every won six games in a row. The 2010 squad will go for their sixth straight on Tuesday against Lycoming.
"We are going to get measured up pretty quickly on Tuesday," Beers said. "Lycoming is a good team and we will see just how far along we have come."
LBC plays at Lycoming on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
Notes:
-Lartey's assist gives him six for the season and the team lead.
-Bergey's goals against average dropped to 1.17 for the year after the shutout.
-LBC held a 19-5 advantage in shots and a 15-0 edge in corner kicks.
