The only thing left to do for the Lancaster Bible College men's soccer team was to score. They had the chances, they had the open goals, they had the great crossing balls, they had it all. By most accounts, they probably had the ball 80-90 percent of the game. And their season still ended.
Philadelphia Biblical University defeated LBC, 5-4 on penalty kicks, earning a 2-1 victory and will head to Florida for the NCCAA National Tournament as the East Region representative. The Chargers are left to wonder what could have been and how they simply did not score a second goal to win the game.
"It's disappointing," Chargers' Head Coach Josh Beers said. "It was a great game and the guys put forth a great effort, but we just couldn't finish."
The Chargers out shot the Crimson Eagles, 24-7 and held an 11-4 edge in corner kicks. It was PBU's Seth Magnum who opened the scoring in the 35th minute. His shot from the right side trickled through into the goal on a play that saw two or three players run in front and screen LBC goalkeeper
Jarrod Bergey.
The score remained that way until the 75th minute when
Cory Greiser was taken down in the box and the Chargers were given a penalty kick.
Lawrence Lartey stepped up and drilled a shot into the top of the goal to tie the score at 1-1.
For the final 15 minutes of regulation and all 20 minutes of both overtimes, LBC had the ball and had chance after chance that simply wouldn't go in, went over the net or was saved by PBU goalkeeper Dave Shaffer.
"Their defense bend and bent, but give them credit, we couldn't score," Beers said. "Shaffer played great the whole game."
With the game tied, penalty kicks decided the East Region winner and after PBU's Gary Bruce sent the first PBU attempt over the net, things were looking up for LBC. Shaffer stepped up again and stopped LBC's third shot by
Kevin Keltner and the score was once again tied. It remained that way until the sixth shooter. The Chargers'
Dwight Shelly had his shot blocked by Shaffer and PBU's Justin Way sent the Crimson Eagles to Florida with his goal on the next shot.
Beers said the team missed their opportunities throughout the game, but will be back next year.
"We will work to get better and come back stronger," Beers said. "I am thankful for our seniors and wish they could have had a better fate today. It's a tough way to lose, but I am proud of our guys."
