Having beaten Penn State Harrisburg and Penn State Abington, the Lancaster Bible College women's tennis team was looking for the "Penn State Branch Campus" sweep as they faced Penn State Berks on Wednesday. The balanced Nittany Lions took five of six singles' matches en route to a 7-2 victory, ending the idea of a Penn State season sweep.
Nicole Karschner was the lone LBC player to win a singles match as she defeated Crystal Hitz, 6-3, 6-3. Karschner and
Bri Funk recorded the other Chargers' point, winning their flight one doubles match, 8-6.
"Karschner played great today," LBC Head Coach
Zach Freeman said. "She had a few hiccups here and there, but responded well and put her opponent away when she had the chance.
LBC's
Kayla Scott played the match of the day, losing in three sets, 7-5, 5-7, 7-5. After losing the first set, Scott responded with a strong and spirited effort that saw her win the second set, before falling in the third.
"Kayla and I had a talk after the first set and she played great the rest of the way," Freeman said. "She is so close to becoming a very complete player, just some of the mental parts of the game are standing in her way, but she is coming along great. I was proud of Kayla today."
The Chargers were without number two player
Carolyn Kensinger and number six player
Michelle Ringler, but still played well for much of the day.
"Not having two regulars hurt, but the team we brought today played well and played hard," Freeman said. "This is a team we will be battling against in our conference next season and it was good for our ladies to see just what type of talent they are up against."
The Chargers host Juniata on Thursday at Linden Hall School in Lititz, Pa. The match is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
