The Lancaster Bible College men's soccer team has scored two or more goals seven times this season. Oh, what they wouldn't have done for just one or two on Saturday.
Philadelphia Biblical University's Gary Bruce scored on a penalty kick just eight minutes into Saturday's contest to propel the Crimson Eagles over the Chargers, 1-0 in Langhorne, Pa. Though Bruce scored the only goal, PBU goalkeeper Dave Shaffer stole the show, making 13 saves, including two on
Lawrence Lartey in the final four minutes.
"We played pretty well as a team the whole game," LBC Head Coach Josh Beers said. "We just couldn't finish and that just happens in soccer sometimes."
Shaffer's counterpart
Jarrod Bergey also played well in goal, making just two saves, but one of them came on a breakaway and kept the Chargers in the game.
"Give Shaffer credit, he played well and made some good saves," Beers said. "Jarrod played well too and kept us in it."
In addition to Bergey, the Chargers (8-7) were once again led by
Jesse Fraser in the defensive end.
Cory Greiser had five shots, while Lartey had four.
For the game, LBC out shot the Crimson Eagles, 19-6, and held a 11-0 edge in corner kicks.
The Crimson Eagles' win means they will be the number one seed for the upcoming NCCAA Division II East Region Tournament. LBC will be the number two seed. Like last year, if the Chargers want to advance to the NCCAA National Tournament, the road will take them through Langhorne.
"The road just got that much tougher if we want to go back to Florida," Beers said. "I am confident our team will respond well and we will find a way."
The Chargers are back in action on Tuesday when they host Patrick Henry at 3:00 p.m.
Notes:
-With the win, PBU is the first home team to win in this series since 2007.
