Chargers Ride Strong First Half to First Victory of 2010-11

Generally, a basketball team has to play well in both halves of the game to be successful. Sometimes, as was the case Wednesday night in Baltimore, a team only has to play well in one half.

The Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team scored 45 points in the first half and led by 28 at halftime and earned their first win of the season, defeating The College of Notre Dame, 61-48.

Box Score

The Chargers (1-1) shot 58 percent in the first half and used a 15-4 run, followed by a 13-1 run three minutes later to take a commanding lead near the end of the first half. The second half, when the Chargers played everyone on the squad, did not go as well. They shot just 19 percent from the floor and saw their lead shrink from 28 to 19 midway through the second half.

Despite the poor shooting in the second half, LBC easily hung on to earn their first win of the season.

"It's nice to get our first win as a team," LBC Head Coach Doug Helsel said. "Hopefully this win will get us rolling a little bit and we can build off of this."

Helsel said the team wanted to come out and play well defensively and they did just that, limiting the Gators to just six first half field goals.

"We set some goals for our team defensively before the game and we were able to meet those," Helsel said. "That is very encouraging this early in the season."

Senior Nicole Karschner led the Chargers with 16 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Lacy McClaine was the only other Chargers' player in double figures with 11. Freshman Brooklyn Wilson, playing in just her second game, had seven points, five assists and three rebounds.

"The intensity on both ends of the floor was tremendous tonight," Helsel said. "Even though we had a bit of a let down in the second half, our play in the first half was great and let us play everyone. It's nice to get the whole team in so everyone can enjoy the first win."

LBC will go for win number two on Friday when they take on NCCAA Division I school Cincinnati Christian. The game will be played at Valley Forge Christian College as part of the Hersha Hospitality Big East Classic. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.

Notes:
-Karschner is averaging 16.5 points through two games. She averaged just 7.1 points per game last season.

-Wednesday's game was the first of five straight games away from Horst Athletic Center for the Chargers, their longest such streak of the season.
