Early Deficit Dooms Chargers in Loss to Delaware Valley

Heading into Monday's game with a chance to finish the first semester with a .500 record, the Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team hoped to jump out to an early lead. Delaware Valley had the same idea and beat the Chargers to the punch.

The Aggies scored 22 of the game's first 24 points and cruised to an easy 77-49 victory. The Chargers actually outscored the Aggies in the second half, but the 29-point halftime deficit was too much to overcome.

"It was bad from the get-go tonight," Chargers' Head Coach Doug Helsel said. "We played better in the second half, but Delaware Valley is a good team."

LBC senior Lacy McClaine had a game-high 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting, while fellow senior Nicole Karschner had eight points and a career-high 15 rebounds. The 15 rebounds by a Chargers' player is the most since Meredith Wrightson had 17 on January 31, 2008 against Penn State Altoona.

Despite the loss, Helsel said the team understands they need to improve on a couple of things, but was again impressed by the ladies will to win and keep playing.

"The ladies played hard until the end again and that is going to be important as we play some tough games in the second semester," Helsel said.

The Chargers (4-6) do not play again until January 6, 2011 when they face Eastern University at 7:00 p.m. in St. David's, Pa.
