Jones, Nittany Lions Run Past Chargers

Many college basketball teams like to play a full-court press early in the game to try and force early turnovers. Wednesday night at Horst Athletic Center, the visiting Nittany Lions from Penn State-Harrisburg decided to press for a full 40 minutes. It worked.

The Nittany Lions forced 30 Lancaster Bible College turnovers en route to a 92-78 victory. Steve Jones led PSU-Harrisburg with 27 points, 10 steals and six rebounds. Six of his 27 points came in a 3:40 stretch early in the second half that saw the Nittany Lions extend their lead from five to 21.

"Give PSU credit," Charger Head Coach Pete Beers said. "They pressed very well tonight and you cannot turn the ball over 30 times and win."

LBC (8-11) answered PSU's 18-2 run with a 10-0 run of their own, but after cutting the lead to 11, could not get over the hump.

"I am just not sure we have that killer instinct at times," Beers said. "We get a team on the ropes and instead of attacking, we pull back and give them a chance to recover."

The Chargers were led by senior Carl Edwards, who had 16 points and a season-high 18 rebounds. Travis Weyandt had nine points and four rebounds off the bench for LBC.

"Travis gave us some very good minutes tonight," Beers said. "Carl showed that he's a man and he gave everything he had tonight."

Kevin Keltner had 20 points, seven rebounds and seven assists in the loss, while Eric Nulf had 14 points and four rebounds.

LBC continued to struggle at the free throw line Wednesday night, shooting just 55.2 percent.

The Chargers schedule does not get any easier as they face a tough Misericordia team on Monday night at Horst Athletic Center. Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m.
