Playing their first home games on campus this season, the Lancaster Bible College baseball team hoped a return home would yield their first wins of the 2010 season as well. While they came close, the Chargers again fell short of earning their first victory as they dropped two games to Immaculata.
The Mighty Macs won game one, 1-0 and game two, 11-6 in eight innings.
In game one, LBC's
Ben Markey and Immaculata's Ernell Harley engaged in a seven-inning pitcher's duel. Markey, the game's hard-luck loser, gave up just four hits, while walking three and striking out two. Andrew Dietrich scored on a passed ball in the top of the seventh to give the Mighty Macs the lead.
The Chargers fought back in the bottom half of the inning and had runners on second and third with one out. LBC's
Marcus Benner hit a fly ball to center which was caught by David News. LBC's
Chad Hollinger tug up and raced to home, but News' throw beat him there and Hollinger was tagged out by Mighty Macs' catcher Patrick Boulware for the game's final out.
Harley got the shutout win for Immaculata. He allowed five hits, one walk and struck out six.
Game two featured more offense, but yielded the same result for LBC. Immaculata took an early 2-0 lead before the Chargers tied it in the bottom of the second. LBC's
Drew Tilley scored on an error before
Justin Long scored on a wild pitch by Andrew McCoy to tie the game at 2-2.
The Mighty Macs (4-9) wasted little time getting the runs back as they scored twice in the top half of the third inning. The score remained the same until
Caleb Erb came up with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth. Just like he did on Tuesday night against Cazenovia, Erb cleared the bases with an extra-base hit. His double scored
Frank DiFilippo,
Josh Butala and
Steve Jacques and put the Chargers ahead 6-4.
Immaculata got one run back in the top of the fifth on a single by Dietrich. LBC's Benner relieved starter
Josh Chamberlin and got out of a one-out bases loaded jam to preserve the 6-5 lead. The Mighty Macs completed the comeback in the seventh on Kris Hazlett's RBI groundout that scored Harley and tied the game at 6-6.
Immaculata then scored five runs on four hits in the extra frame to put the game out of reach. LBC managed just three hits against Immaculata pitchers McCoy and Richard Cusic.
Drew Tilley was 1-for-2 and scored two runs in the loss.
The Chargers (0-7) are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Media, Pa. to take on Williamson Trade. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
