LBC Bats Catch Fire, Crush Defenders

It is always a good day when you can do everything right and beat one of your rivals. If that is the case, the Lancaster Bible College baseball team had a really good day on Thursday. Senior Lou Curcio led the Chargers with his bat and then his arm to a sweep of Baptist Bible College.

The Chargers scored at least one run in every inning in Game 1, including a nine-run outburst in the bottom of the sixth. After Caleb Erb led off the inning with a walk, Curcio jacked a two-run home run to left-center, which increased the LBC lead to 9-2. The Chargers (4-7) batted around and Curcio came to the plate with the bases loaded. Curcio crushed a pitch down the left field line that stayed fair and cleared the fence easily, as Curcio had his second homer of the inning.

"I have never hit two home runs in one game, let alone one inning," Curcio said. "It was nice to score that many runs in one game because we have had our struggles this season."

Senior Ben Markey got out of a jam in the top half of the seventh and earned the 16-3 victory. Markey scattered seven hits, and struck out four to earn his second win of the season.

Curcio finished 3-for-5 with seven runs batted in and two runs scored. Frank DiFilippo, Marcus Benner and Caleb Erb also had three hits a piece. Senior Steve Jacques was 1-for-3 with three RBI's.

Curcio left his mark on the second game of the doubleheader as well. He threw just 75 pitches on his way to earning a complete game shutout, his second game this season without allowing an earned run. Curcio struck out four and scattered six hits in the win.

"The defense played great behind me," Curcio said. "When we hit as well as we did today, we are going to win games."

For the second straight game, Curcio had three hits. He finished the doubleheader 6-for-11, with 8 RBI's and three runs scored. Chad Hollinger was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a run batted in. Josh Chamberlin was 2-for-4 with a run scored and batted in. DiFilippo was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI. He finished the day 4-for-6 and increased his team leading batting average to .417.

LBC has won four games in a row after starting the season 0-7.

"We are learning that we are a good team," Curcio said. "We know what we are capable of, we just need to show it each time we take the field."

The Chargers return to the diamond on Saturday when they head to Middletown, Pa. to take on Penn State-Harrisburg. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Notes:
-Curcio's homers were the first of the season for LBC.

-The 16 runs scored were the most for LBC since they scored 17 against Williamson Trade last April.

-Curcio raised his average from .250 to .333 thanks to his 6-for-11 performance.

-Erb and Curcio are tied for the team lead in RBI with 12.
