The Lancaster Bible College baseball team's bats matched the weather on Tuesday afternoon - cold. LBC managed just 12 hits in two games and lost twice to visiting Eastern University. The Eagles won game one, 10-1, and cruised to a 7-0 win in game two.
In game one, LBC (7-12) pitcher
Steve Jacques held the Eagle bats at bay for five innings before surrendering a two-run home run to Dan Garcia which put the Eagles up 4-1. After loading the bases, Jacques was replaced by
Joel Butala who walked the first batter he faced to make the score 5-1. Eastern batted around in the top of the seventh and added five more runs to make it 10-1.
Lou Curcio,
Frank DiFilippo and
Chad Hollinger each had two hits for the Chargers. Curcio drove in LBC's only run on an RBI single in the bottom of the first. Jacques took the loss, scattering eight hits over 5 1/3 innings. He did not walk anyone, but hit two batters.
In game two, many of the LBC starters received time off and many of the bench players got their first start of the season. LBC starting pitcher
Josh Chamberlin held Eastern to just seven hits, but seven LBC errors extened innings and cost them in the end.
Eastern's Scott Renauro homered in the top of third and extended his hitting streak to 20 games. He has reached base safely in all 25 of Eastern's games this season. His home run started a three run inning that would be more than enough for Eagles' starting pitcher Greg Lukasik. Lukasik went six innings, giving up just four hits while striking out eight.
For LBC, freshman
Justin Long got his first collegiate hit on a single in the bottom of the fifth.
Caleb Tribbitt hit his second double of the season in the second. Chamberlin took the loss despite giving up just six hits in six innings. He struck out two and walked two.
The Chargers have little time to rest as they take on NCCAA East Region rival Philadelphia Biblical University on Wednesday in Longhorne, Pa. Game one's first pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
Notes:
-LBC's
Frank DiFilippo was 2-for-4 in Game one before receiving game two off. He has a hit in 15 of the 18 games he has played in. He leads the team in hitting with a .435 average.
-Both of
Caleb Tribbitt's hits this season are doubles.
