Needing a split of Wednesday's doubleheader at Philadelphia Biblical University to secure the number one seed in the upcoming NCCAA East Region Tournament, the Lancaster Bible College baseball team decided a split was not good enough. Instead, they set a new school record for most runs scored in one doubleheader.
The Chargers crushed the Crimson Eagles, winning game one 16-0, followed by a 21-0 trouncing in game two. The 37 runs scored are two better than the previous record of 35 set during the 2000 season against Valley Forge Christian College.
Senior
Ben Markey got all of the run support he would need in the top of the first as the Chargers scored five times to open game one. Markey did the rest as, he pitched a complete game shutout, striking out four, while allowing just two hits.
Senior
Lou Curcio and freshman
Frank DiFilippo each had three hits to lead LBC. Curcio finished the game 3-for-5 with five RBI's and two runs scored. DiFilippo was 3-for-5 with two RBI's and a run scored. Freshman
Caleb Erb was 2-for-6, but drove in four runs and scored three times. Leadoff hitter
Steve Jacques scored four times.
"We came here and took care of business today," Curcio said. "We had great pitching and were smart at the plate and on the bases."
Game two featured much of the same as the Chargers (9-12) stormed out of the gate again, scoring nine runs in the first two innings. Curcio pitched his second complete game shutout of the season, allowing just four hits, while striking out seven.
DiFilippo, the team's leading hitter at .472, was 4-for-5 with two RBI's and four runs scored.
Josh Chamberlin also had four hits. He also drove in four runs and scored a run. Curcio stayed on a tear, going 3-for-6 and scoring five runs.
Drew Tilley and
Joel Butala each had two hits, while driving in two runs and scoring two runs. Jacques was 3-for-5 with a career high six runs driven in.
"Our first mission was to sweep the region and get the number one seed," Chargers' Head Coach Doug Yager said. "We have completed that and now it is onto the last few games before we prepare for the NCCAA East Regional Tournament."
The Chargers are back in action on Friday when they play Lancaster County foe Elizabethtown at 3:00 p.m.
