After losing game one of their doubleheader against Mount Aloysius on Saturday because of the Mounties three home runs, the Lancaster Bible College baseball team decided to flex their own muscles in game two. The result was four home runs and a 9-7 win to earn a split against the Mounties, whom the Chargers had never beaten in team history (0-7 heading into game two).
Mount Aloysius (16-19) won game one, 14-3 behind strong pitching and power. Bryan Nolan and Mark Saxman each had three hits to lead the Mounties. Nathan Lindsley scattered nine hits and gave up three runs to earn the win.
LBC's
Drew Tilley had three hits in game one, including his second home run of the season. Senior
Steve Jacques had two hits and drove in a run as well.
Ben Markey took the loss for LBC, giving up seven hits and eight earned runs in four innings.
Game two starter
Lou Curcio allowed two hits through the first four innings before the Mounties began their comeback.
Caleb Erb, Friday's game one hero, hit his second home run of the season to open the scoring in the home half of the first. The score remained 1-0 until the fourth when the Chargers exploded for four runs.
Marcus Benner, hitting in the ninth spot, connected for a home run to dead center to put LBC up 3-0. Erb singled home Jacques before scoring on a Curcio single. Up 5-0 and cruising, the LBC defense let the Mounties back in the game. A key error allowed a run to score, cutting the lead to 5-3.
An unlikely two-run homer from
Joel Butala put the Chargers back up 7-3 heading into the sixth, but Mount Aloysius' David Brown hit a three-run home run in the top half of the sixth to cut the Chargers' lead to one. Curcio got out of the sixth by picking a runner off of first and striking out Mike Claycomb.
LBC's
Frank DiFilippo added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth with his fifth home run of the season. Curcio allowed a Saxman homer in the seventh, but the Mounties would get no closer as Curcio struck out Aaron Kovach to end the game.
The Chargers' regular season finale will be Wednesday when they host Penn State-York at 1:00 p.m.
