In both games of Friday's doubleheader against Williamson Trade, the Lancaster Bible College baseball team struggled in the field and at the plate. Freshman
Caleb Erb made sure the fans still went home happy - twice.
Erb hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning in game one to cap a four-run inning and lead the Chargers past the Mechanics, 10-7. In game two after LBC scored three runs in the bottom half of the sixth to take the lead, Erb earned his second save of the season, leading the Chargers to a 7-6 win.
LBC (11-13), trailed 7-6 heading into their final at-bat in game one. After a
Steve Jacques RBI single scored Tim Landis and a
Josh Chamberlin single, Erb came to the plate with two-on and two-out. Erb connected on a pitch to right-center that cleared the fence much to the delight of the LBC faithful and the LBC bench.
Erb finished game one, 5-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored. He was a double short of the cycle.
Josh Chamberlin had three hits for the Chargers, while
Marcus Benner added two hits of his own.
In game two, LBC led 4-3heading into the fourth when the Mechanics scored twice on a Tim Akers single, making it 5-4. Williamson Trade would tack on another run in the top of the sixth to make it 6-4. After a pop-up and a strike out in the bottom of the sixth, the Chargers looked destined to earn a split of the doubleheader.
The top of the Chargers' line-up had other ideas. Jacques singled and advanced to second on an error before Chamberlin knocked him in with an RBI single. The man-of-the-day, Erb, came to the plate and ripped a double that scored Chamberlin, tying the score. Senior
Lou Curcio, who had struck out in his first two plate appearences, roped a single and scored Erb, giving the Chargers a 7-6 lead.
Erb preserved
Richard Westerlund's second win of the day in the seventh.
LBC hosts Mount Aloysius on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The Chargers will honor seniors
Lou Curcio,
Ben Markey and
Steve Jacques prior to game one.
