Having won four games in a row, the Lancaster Bible College baseball team headed to Middletown, Pa. to take on Penn State-Harrisburg, in the midst of playing their best baseball of the young season. Despite dropping game one 5-3, the Chargers' bats carried them once again, as they earned a split, winning game two, 12-11.
In game one, the teams were tied at 1-1 heading to the bottom of the fifth when the Nittany Lions finally got to LBC starter
Marcus Benner. Despite pitching well for 4 1/3 innings, Benner could not silence the PSU-Harrisburg bats and they scored four runs on four hits in the fifth to open the game up. LBC made a late run in the top of the seventh, scoring twice on an RBI single by
Josh Chamberlin, but could get no closer.
The fifth inning was again proved to be the difference in game two. With the Chargers (5-8) trailing 7-6, they batted around, scoring five runs on four hits. Freshman
Frank DiFilippo continued his strong play, going 3-for-5 with four RBI's and three runs scored. His four RBI's came via two two-run home runs, one in the third and one in the fourth.
With LBC up 11-7 in the bottom of the fifth, the Nittany Lions made another charge, closing the gap to one, 11-10. DiFilippo came in and relieved
Richard Westerlund and got out of a bases loaded jam.
Lou Curcio scored an insurance run on an error in the top of the seventh and held on to earn the save in the bottom of the seventh.
Chad Hollinger was 2-for-5 with an RBI, while Curcio was 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Chamberlin finished the day 4-for-7 with four RBI's and two runs scored.
The Chargers will face Gallaudet in Washington D.C. on Thursday at 2:00 p.m.
