The preseason talk of a deep run into the playoffs and a history making season felt very premature after the Lancaster Bible College men's soccer loss to Albright on Wednesday.
The Lions controlled all parts of the game and beat the Chargers 4-1 at Charger Field. LBC (0-1) came out flat and never regained its footing as Albright beat the Chargers for the second straight season.
"We were concerned about our defense and that got exposed," Chargers Head Coach Josh Beers said. "What I was most disappointed in was how much we were outworked."
The Lions (1-0) held the ball for much of the first half and took a 1-0 lead into halftime thanks to a Chris Tadley goal in the 23rd minute.
Wasting no time, Albright scored just 47 seconds into the second half on a goal by David Folino. An own goal by LBC made it 3-0 Lions in the 62nd minute.
Dwight Shelly gave the Chargers some hope less than a minute later when his blast from 25 yards out beat Lions' goalkeeper Billy Howard.
Albright tightened their defense and even got another insurance goal in the 85th minute from Gibrilla Conde.
"Our freshmen looked like freshmen, but so did some of our upperclassmen," Beers said.
Albright out shot the Chargers 18-8 and held a 7-1 edge in corner kicks as well.
"We have to get tougher and we have a lot of things to fix at both ends of the field," Beers said. "The good thing is that our mistakes are fixable."
The Chargers have two days to fix some of those problems before they take on Penn State-Harrisburg in Middletown, Pa. on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. LBC beat PSU-Harrisburg 3-2 last season in Lancaster.
Notes:
-Because of the 95 degree heat, both teams used many of their bench players. Including the 11 starters, LBC used 23 players, while the Lions used 20 players.
-Shelly's goal was the first of his collegiate career.
-LBC lost their season opener for the second straight season and for the sixth time in seven years.
