Chargers Score Two Second Half Goals to Defeat Washington Adventist, 2-1

After giving up 11 goals in their first three games of the season, the Lancaster Bible College men's soccer team appears to have solved its defensive problems. Using a stingy defense and timely scoring, the Chargers defeated NCAA Division II foe Washington Adventist, 2-1 in Takoma Park, Md. on Monday night.

LBC junior Lawrence Lartey scored the game-winning goal with five minutes remaining to propel the Chargers (2-3). Freshman Daniel O'Malley tied the game 1-1 early in the second half with the first collegiate goal of his career.

"It was a great team effort tonight," LBC Assistant Coach Tommy Ardt said. "It was not a pretty win, but it was a good win against a solid opponent."

LBC senior Kyle Zook had two assists, and is tied for the team lead with three.

Ardt said he was pleased with the team's play in the midfield.

"We challenged every 50-50 ball and won a lot of them," Ardt said. "We were aggressive and it paid off."

On the defensive end, Jesse Fraser and Richard Westlund provided a solid wall in front of goalkeeper Grant Lockard.

"Fraser and Westerlund did a great job for us tonight in our end, and Grant was solid again in goal," Ardt said.

The Chargers will get the rest of the week off before facing Alvernia on Saturday in Reading, Pa. at 1:00 p.m.
