Monday night proved to be more of the same for the Lancaster Bible College men's soccer team. Just when it looked like something good was going to happen, in this case a 1-0 halftime lead, Goucher's Elijah Lais scored from 30 yards out to tie the game 1-1 with three seconds left in the half.
With the LBC momentum gone, Lais scored again two minutes into the second half and completed the hatrick in the 68th minute to lead the Gophers over the Chargers, 3-1 on Monday night in Towson, Md.
"Lais' first goal completely killed the momentum we had heading into the half," LBC Head Coach Josh Beers said. "This is a very deflating loss for us, but we have to be able to bounce back and we have to do it quickly with a very important game on Wednesday against Valley Forge Christian."
LBC's
Miles Oxenford scored his second goal of the season to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute.
Kyle Zook crossed the ball to Oxenford to earn his fourth assist of the season. The point moves Zook into a tie for eighth place on the all-time LBC points list with 96.
The Chargers (2-5) out shot the Gophers, 17-12, while each team had four corner kicks.
"I thought we controlled much of the play," Beers said. "We are simply not scoring enough and giving up too many soft goals."
After only giving up 31 goals in 24 games last season, the Chargers have already given up 17 in seven games this season.
"The goaltending situation is what it is and there is not much in the way of a quick fix," Beers said. "We cannot let teams exploit the goaltending."
Beers said
Jesse Fraser and
Dwight Shelly both played well in defensive end, while
Taylor Dooley was a force in the midfield.
"Right now we are fighting, but we are fighting individually," Beers said. "We need to fight as a team and work together."
As was noted above, the Chargers take on Valley Forge Christian at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday in Phoenixville, Pa.
LBC returns home for the first time since the opening game of the season on Thursday when they face Waynesburg at 3:00 p.m. The Chargers will take on Baptist Bible College on Saturday as part of LBC's Homecoming festivities at 2:00 p.m.
