Playing four games in six days, the Lancaster Bible College men's soccer team finally got the boost they desperately needed to get them through the week - enter
Sean Westerlund. Westerlund's two goals helped the Chargers defeat Valley Forge Christian on Wednesday, 3-1.
Westerlund opened the scoring in the 27th minute off a feed from junior
Lawrence Lartey. He scored again in the 74th minute to put the game away for LBC (3-5).
In the middle of Westerlund's goals, the Patriots tied the game at 1-1 on another long goal allowed by the Chargers, this time from 35 yards out. VFCC's Kyle Shirvani's goal in the 37th minute seemed eerily similar to the goal the Chargers allowed on Monday at Goucher that crushed their momentum and led to a 3-1 loss.
Wednesday however, LBC re-grouped at halftime and
Cory Greiser scored his fourth goal of the season just four minutes into the second half. Greiser took a pass from
Taylor Dooley that gave him a breakaway and his goal wound up being the game-winner.
Westerlund clinched the win scoring again off of a pass from Lartey.
"We had to grind today to get the win," LBC Head Coach Josh Beers said. "We controlled play throughout the game, but we are still struggling to finish."
The Chargers out shot the Patriots, 15-3 and did not allow a shot on goal in the second half.
"Sean provided a great spark for us today," Beers said. "We love when he plays like that."
LBC will have little time to enjoy the win as they host Waynesburg at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday.
