Up 3-0 just 18 minutes into the game, the Lancaster Bible College men's soccer team looked to be headed for a much-needed, easy win. Waynesburg decided to make them earn it. Using tough defense and timely goalkeeping, LBC held on for a 3-2 victory.
Two
Lawrence Lartey goals and a header by freshman
Daniel O'Malley put the Chargers up 3-0 early. O'Malley's goal came off a corner kick by
Zak Kraehmer in the 16th minute.
"Daniel is growing into a nice player for us this season," LBC Head Coach Josh Beers said. "He has played very well thus far."
Lartey, who played in front of his parents who are visiting from Missouri, poked home his second goal just before Waynesburg goalkeeper Ryan Hunsberger could make the save.
Cory Greiser, who took a hard hit to his leg during the game, collected his second assist of the game on Lartey's goal.
"I thought Cory's first half was the most complete half of soccer I've seen him play in his three years here," Beers said.
Waynesburg however, would not go home quietly.
LBC's
Tim Carver pulled down a Yellow Jackets' player in the box and Waynesburg's Erick Burke put home the penalty kick past
Grant Lockard to cut the lead to 3-1 in the 31st minute. It would not be his last penalty kick of the game.
Before he had a chance to tie the game, Burke scored again just nine minutes later to trim the lead to 3-2.
Heading into the half, LBC had gone through the emotional high of scoring three goals and the emotional low of seeing the lead all-but disappear. Coming out of halftime, the Chargers began to control play, but midway through the half, Burke was fouled by Lartey in the box and given another penalty kick opportunity.
With
Jarrod Bergey now in goal for the Chargers, he guessed perfectly and got a hand on Burke's shot that was heading for the lower left-hand corner. With the save, LBC got the boost they needed and held off the pesky Yellow Jackets.
"I was thrilled with our start and the way we played after the PK save," Beers said. "That save was the biggest of our season."
Beers stressed that while they had spurts of good play, the Chargers need to play a game where they are consistent the whole time.
"We need to sustain our discipline for a full 90 minutes," Beers said. "When we are disciplined, we can play with anyone, but we have yet to do it for a full game."
With two straight wins and the team beginning to play better as a unit, Beers is excited to see where the team can go during the middle portion of its schedule.
"We are beginning to find our identity," Beers said. "We are a team that needs to score goals to win and we are starting to embrace that."
The Chargers (4-5) will host Baptist Bible College on Homecoming this Saturday at 2:00 p.m. LBC defeated the Defenders, 2-1 last season in Clarks Summit, Pa.
