Every young soccer player dreams of scoring a game-winning goal for his or her team in the final seconds against one of their biggest rivals. Lancaster Bible College's
Cory Greiser lived out his dream on Homecoming Saturday with his goal from 20 yards out with one second left on the clock. The goal, scored in the upper left-hand side of the cage, gave the Chargers and improbable, 2-1 victory over Baptist Bible College.
Greiser took a pass from
Zak Kraehmer, dribbled the ball for a quick second and left-footed the ball towards the goal, when he looked up, the team and many of the fans were headed towards him to celebrate at midfield.
"I looked back and quickly saw there were 11 seconds to go," Greiser said. "So when I took the pass, I knew I had to get a quick shot off. I didn't think it would go upper 90."
LBC Head Coach Josh Beers said he has never seen anything like Greiser's goal.
"It's the most memorable goal in my 16 years of coaching soccer," Beers said. "I'm just so proud of everyone on the team."
The second half did not exactly start out well for the Chargers (5-5). After 10 minutes of back-and-forth soccer, LBC committed a foul in the box and the Defenders were awarded a penalty kick. BBC's Josh Jackson scored past a diving
Grant Lockard to put the Defenders ahead, 1-0.
With BBC killing time and the Chargers not taking advantage of their chances, things looked grim with three minutes to go. Enter LBC junior
Lawrence Lartey. Lartey took a pass from
Kevin Keltner, spun to his right and fired a shot from 22 yards out over BBC goalkeeper Ian McGovern to tie the game at 1-1 with 2:11 remaining.
"We fought through the adversity of the game and in true Chargers' spirit were able to get a victory today," Lartey said.
Beers echoed Lartey's statement.
"I'm so proud of the last 15 minutes we played," Beers said. "We were poised and for the first time this season, we decided as a team that we were not going to lose this game."
The Chargers controlled play for the final two minutes and Greiser's goal capped a game that will live on forever in everyone's mind.
"Baptist Bible is a good team and we did not take them lightly," Greiser said. "Coach said he wanted some speed at the top and we were able to provide that. The ending just cannot get much better than that."
The Chargers held a 16-7 advantage in shots, and 8-4 edge in corner kicks.
After the celebration on the field, it was determined that the final second of the game had to be played. After the fans cleared the floor [like at a college basketball or football game when there is time remaining], Baptist Bible took one final shot off the start that sailed wide.
Lartey, who shares the team lead in points with Greiser, summed up how he and most of the players felt when the game was over.
"God has given us a gift of being able to play soccer, now I'm going to bed."
