Women's Tennis Shows Improvement, Falls to Marywood

The Lancaster Bible College women's tennis team opened their season on Thursday at Marywood, losing 9-0. Despite the loss, the Chargers fought hard in each match and were tied or led in many of the matches.

LBC sophomore Bri Funk battled back from a set down to tie it at 1-1 before losing 10-6 in a super tie-breaker. Funk, battling through a thigh injury, lost 0-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-10.

"I thought Bri played well today, especially dealing with a pain in her thigh," LBC Head Coach Zach Freeman said. "Give credit to her opponent for playing tough as well, they both played a great match."

LBC senior co-captain Kelsey Scott also played a match that went back-and-forth. After losing the first set 7-5, Scott was down 4-1 in the second set before rattling off three straight games, tying the second set at 4-4. Her opponent, Elizabeth Sullivan, recovered and won the last two points, taking the match 7-5, 6-4.

"Kelsey battled today," Freeman said. "I don't think she played her best tennis, but she was in every point and battled the whole way through."

The number two doubles team of Michelle Ringler and Carolyn Kensinger also played well after fallling behind early. Despite losing 8-5, the team showed promise.

"Michelle and Carolyn had their ups and downs today," Freeman said. "They came out flat and weren't hitting the shots they normally hit, but eventually they recovered and made a match out of it."

The Chargers are back in action on Tuesday when they head to Langhorne, Pa. to take on arch-rival Philadelphia Biblical University at 4:00 p.m.
