Chargers Show Signs of Life in Loss to Delaware Valley, 3-1

This is not exactly the way the Lancaster Bible College men's soccer team thought they were going to begin the season. The Chargers lost again, this time to Delaware Valley, 3-1 in Doylestown, Pa. on Wednesday.

LBC sophomore Sean Westerlund opened the scoring with a goal in the 17th minute off of a 2-on-1 break with Lawrence Lartey. Lartey's crossed the ball beautifully to Westerlund who gave the Chargers their first lead of the season.

The lead lasted until the final moments of the first half when the Aggies scored two quick goals to erase the 1-0 deficit.

"We had a sloppy 20 minutes or so and it cost us," LBC Head Coach Josh Beers said.

Despite giving up the two goals to end the first half, the Chargers played very well in the second half and finally began putting things together after two mediocre games to begin the season.

"I thought we outplayed them in the second half," Beers said. "I am pleased with how we played for the majority of the game today. We finally saw some good things to build on."

After being outplayed in the midfield and the defensive end against Penn State-Harrisburg on Saturday, the Chargers pieced some good play together at both ends of the field on Wednesday.

"Kevin Keltner and Eric Flick played well in the back for us today, and Miles Oxenford played a strong game in the middle and up front for us," Beers said.

Westerlund's goal was also the first goal the Chargers have scored in the first half this season. Beers said the wind was a bit of a factor in the game and played a part in some of the goals scored.

The Chargers once again have a quick turnaround between games as they travel to Cresson, Pa. to take on Mount Aloysius on Friday at 4:00 p.m.

Notes:
-LBC did not lose their third game until Sept. 26 last season and Oct. 8 in 2008.

-Westerlund had six goals last season, four of them coming at NCCAA Nationals.

-Grant Lockard was in goal again for the Chargers and made six saves.

-LBC out shot the Aggies, 17-11.
