Chargers Sprint Out of the Gate, Hammer Gators, 82-40

After turning in one of their poorest performances of the season last Thursday, the Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team rebounded in a big way Tuesday night against The College of Notre Dame, crushing the Gators, 82-40.

LBC (6-9) started the game on a 20-2 run, highlighted by three 3-pointers from Lacy McClaine, and defeated the Gators for the second time this season. McClaine finished the game with 17 points and three rebounds. She was one of four Chargers' players with four or more field goals made.

"We had great shot selection as a team tonight, and though we got out of scheme occasionally, when you have a hot shooter, you have to ride out the streak and we did that tonight with Lacy," Chargers' Head Coach Doug Helsel said.

McClaine's hot streak lasted for most of the first half as she drained five straight 3-pointers. And she wasn't the only one who had a hard time missing for the Chargers Tuesday night. Nicole Karschner also had 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting, while Brooklyn Wilson had nine points (3-of-5), 10 rebounds and five assists.

"Brooklyn played great. I didn't think we would get 10 rebounds from our point guard tonight," Helsel joked. "She is playing a high level and not like a freshman at all."

The Chargers shot 49 percent for the game, including a season-high 69 percent (9-of-13) from beyond the arc.

"We weren't confident at all last Thursday and tonight we did a much better job with that," Helsel said. "Our three senior-captains played and led well tonight and that allowed our other players to relax a bit and play their games as well."

One of those other players was Lauren Heliger who had 11 points and a season-high nine assists. Her ability to dribble down the floor through Gators' players and see the open player enabled the Chargers to score many of their 30 points in the paint.

"Heliger saw the floor beautifully tonight," Helsel said. "She had her head up on the fast break and passed the ball very well. It became contagious and everyone started seeing the floor well."

LBC's 42-point win was their best since November 29, 2007 when they defeated Valley Forge Military College by 61 points, 66-5. Though they rebounded from their 46-point drubbing by winning by 42 on Tuesday, Helsel knows neither game is an accurate portrait of his team.

"We aren't going to play as badly as we did last Thursday and we aren't going to shoot 69 percent from 3-point land either most nights, so we have to find somewhere in the middle where we can be consistent," Helsel said.

Their first chance to find that consistency is Thursday night when they take on NCCAA East Region rival Valley Forge Christian College.

"We aren't putting all of our eggs in one basket for Thursday, but we know it is a big game, a good measuring stick for us," Helsel said. "We want to keep focusing on us and fixing what we can control."

Thursday's tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

Notes:
-The 82 points LBC scored was the most since February 4, 2006 when they lost 108-82 to Penn State York.

-The Gators' India Scott had 19 points and 19 rebounds.

-The Chargers had a season-high 21 steals.
