Chargers Use Big Scoring Runs to Beat Trinity, 62-54

Earlier in the 2010-11 season, when the Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team needed buckets, they simply would not go in. A turnover here, a missed shot there, nothing would find the basket.

Monday night against Trinity Washington University, the Chargers got the buckets.

Lacy McClaine hit three 3-pointers in 90 seconds midway through the second half and Lauren Heliger scored six points in 56 seconds late in the second half as the Chargers held off the Tigers, 62-54.

The Chargers held onto a 28-24 lead at halftime and the Tigers trimmed the lead to one with 16:07 to play. McClaine hit the first of her four second half 3-pointers to increase the lead back to four, a lead the Chargers would hold until the 10:15 mark. That's when McClaine caught fire and knocked down three straight triples and increased the lead to 11 with 8:07 to play.

"I think all of the ladies are starting to learn where their best shots are," Chargers' Head Coach Doug Helsel said. "I was proud of Lacy tonight. She did not shoot very well in the first half (1-of-5), but let the game come to her in the second half and shot the ball much better."

The Tigers would not go away quietly and pulled to within six with 3:09 to play after two LaShawna Ervin free throws. That's when Heliger took over and sealed the win for LBC (8-10).

Heliger sank a jumper, stole the ball and scored on an easy layup 22 seconds apart and followed that with a jumper in the paint 34 seconds later to put the Chargers up 60-48.

LBC held on in the final two minutes and secured their second win in three days. Helsel was most proud of his bench and role players Monday night. Vanessa Clemenson, Emily Lloyd and Brittney Becker combined to shoot 9-of-12 and pull down 20 rebounds.

"Becker, Lloyd and Clemenson, our 'non-scorers', were so efficient tonight," Helsel said. "They were not trying to do too much and simply took good shots all night. They are as important as our starting five."

LaShawna Ervin led Trinity with 22 points and six rebounds, while Danielle Owens had 10 points and 15 rebounds.

LBC will play Penn State Altoona on Wednesday in a rematch of their first game of the season. The Lady Lions beat the Chargers, 81-57 on November 15 in Lancaster.

"I'm hoping we are not the team we were then," Helsel said. "Three of our key players hadn't practiced before that game due to fall sports and we really did not have a good feel for our offense. That said, Altoona is a good team and does not make a lot of mistakes. We will have to play well."

Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Notes:
-LBC is now 3-2 all-time against Trinity, including 2-0 this season.

-Trinity held a 43-35 edge in rebounds, including 23 on the offensive glass.
