Nicole Karschner became the fifth woman in school history to score 1,000 points in the Chargers', 62-51 loss to Rosemont on Monday night at Horst Athletic Center.
Karschner's jumper with 13 seconds to play gave her exactly 1,000 points for her career. She becomes the first woman to score 1,000 points since Nicole Cooper scored her 1,000th point during the 2006-07 season.
"I'm happy it's over," Karschner said jokingly after the game. "It's way too much stress, but I am really happy to have gotten to 1,000 points, it means a lot."
Karschner and her teammates struggled all night finding the basket, shooting just 29 percent for the game. They trailed 30-19 at halftime and made just seven buckets in the first half.
"We didn't shoot well in either half, but the first half especially," Chargers' Head Coach Doug Helsel said. "When you turn the ball over as much as we did and don't shoot well, you're going to dig yourself into a hole like we did."
LBC (9-12) held the Ravens without a point for the first six minutes of the second half, but only scored four points themselves, cutting the lead to 30-23. After falling behind by nine points again, LBC went on a 19-11 run and took a brief 42-41 lead on two Karschner free throws.
Rosemont (6-11) battled back due in part to Ashley Montecchio and Vanessa Johnson who combined to score 25 points and grab 20 rebounds. Their play down the stretch helped the Ravens regain a lead they would not relinquish.
LBC sophomore
Lauren Heliger led the Chargers with 14 points and added five rebounds.
Lacy McClaine had nine points for LBC.
"We came out flat tonight and never really got anything started," Helsel said. "We have played well lately, so to come out like we did is a little surprising."
With just four games left in the regular season, Helsel hopes the Chargers can put this game behind them and more forward.
"We have to keep marching on and play better then we did tonight," Helsel said.
The Chargers will face Penn State York on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. in York.
Notes:
-Karschner joins her brother Drew as a 1,000 point scorer at LBC. Drew played for the men's basketball team from 2004-07 and finished with 1,493 points in just three years.
-Karschner is just the 22nd basketball player in school history with 1,000 points. Kevin Keltner from the men's basketball team scored his 1,000th point earlier this season.
