After playing so well at the end of the 2010, the early part of 2011 and Eastern University for that matter, did not treat the Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team very well Thursday night. The host Eagles shot 58 percent in the first half and built a 20-point they would never relinquish as they spoiled the 2011 opener for the Chargers, winning 85-51.
Division I transfer Shante Jones had 29 points and 11 rebounds to lead Eastern. Bekah Roland chipped in with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Katie Lincoln had 15 points and six assists.
The Chargers (4-7) were led by
Emily Lloyd and her 15 points. Senior
Lacy McClaine had 14 points and four boards, while fellow senior
Nicole Karschner had eight points.
"We just didn't play like we are capable of playing tonight," Chargers' Head Coach Doug Helsel said. "We will use this game as a stepping stone and work to get better."
The Eagles forced 13 first half turnovers to take a 20-point lead into halftime. Helsel said the Chargers were a bit too cautious in the opening half and it cost them.
"We were too hesitant in the first half," Helsel said. "We need to have more confidence when we take the floor. We played much better in the second half when we took the floor with passion and confidence."
The Chargers will need to make adjustments quickly. They host NCCAA East Region rival Baptist Bible College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Helsel said the team needs to get back fundamentals and make sure they take care of themselves before worrying about their opponents.
"We just need to fix a few basic things like ball-handling and some of our passes," Helsel said. "We have to play with the same speed other teams have and make sure we are worrying about how we play, not so much the teams we are playing."
Notes:
-Eastern (7-4) is now 10-2 all-time against the Chargers.
-The Eagles held a 46-24 rebounding advantage.
