Heading into Thursday's game with Keuka, the Lancaster Bible College men's soccer team knew it controlled its destiny to secure its first-ever NEAC playoff berth. After coming up empty against the Storm, the Chargers will now need help to attain that elusive playoff berth.
Keuka's Austin Gerber scored with just over 20 minutes to play to put Keuka ahead, 2-1. The Chargers had chances at the end, but could not convert and now sit in a three-way tie for fifth place in the NEAC standings.
"We had chances to do good things today, we just didn't take advantage of our chances," LBC Head Coach
Tom Ardt said. "We let a golden opportunity slip away and now we need help."
Frank Iacovangelo opened the scoring for Keuka 19:51 into the game. Off a free kick from 40 yards out, Gerber lofted the ball over the Chargers' defenders and Iacovangelo was there to head the ball into the net. LBC's
Sean Westerlund tied the game with 1:47 remaining in the first half off of a beautiful cross from brother
Richard Westerlund.
The game remained tied until Iacovangelo and Gerber hooked up to put Keuka ahead for good. Iacovangelo's through ball was headed by Gerber up and over Chargers' goalkeeper
Jarrod Bergey for the game-winner.
LBC out shot Keuka, 13-9, but the Storm held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Chargers [5-9-2, 3-3-2] have two NEAC regular season games reamaining, the first of which is Saturday against SUNY Cobleskill.
"We have a big practice on Friday and we need to bring energy on Saturday," Ardt said. "Saturday and Tuesdsay are must-wins now and we have to be ready."
Saturday's game is Senior Day and LBC will honor its seniors prior to the 1:00 p.m. start time.
