Late Goal Not Enough as Chargers Fall to Lycoming, 2-1

If only the game were a few minutes longer.

The Lancaster Bible College men's soccer team took their time getting their offense started on Tuesday against Lycoming and in the end they waited just a bit too long. Lycoming scored six minutes into the second half to take a two-goal lead and hung on to defeat the Chargers, 2-1 in non-conference action at Charger Field.

The Warriors' Matt Snively opened the scoring 20:24 into the game, chipping the ball over LBC goalkeeper Jarrod Bergey to give Lycoming a 1-0 lead. The score stayed that way through halftime as Lycoming had many more scoring chances in the first half.

"We started out defensively and wanted see what Lycoming would do," Chargers' Head Coach Tom Ardt said. "After 15 or 20 minutes we decided to play our normal way and we started to move and possess the ball better."

Six minutes into the second half, Lycoming's Mike Krebs took a pass from Chris Hale and headed the ball up and over a charging Bergey and into the goal. LBC defenseman Jesse Fraser just missed getting to the ball before it crossed the goal line.

Not too long after the Warriors made it 2-0, the LBC offense came to life and the Chargers began getting scoring chances every few minutes. Their hard work paid off with 14:29 to go when Fraser heaed the ball into the right hand corner of the goal off a corner kick from Taylor Dooley.

"We had lots of fluid play for the last 20 minutes of the game," Ardt said. "I that we played very well the last 20 minutes and gave a great effort today, even though we didn't get the win."

LBC [3-7-1 overall, 3-1-1 NEAC] had a few chances in the final minutes, including a corner kick, but could not put the ball past Lycoming goalkeeper Connor Keenan who made two saves on the day.

The Chargers have little time to dwell on the loss as they host Valley Forge Christian on Wednesday.

"Tomorrow is a big game," Ardt said. "I expect us to come out sharp and frankly, we need to play well in an East Region game for 90 minutes."

The winner of tomorrow's game will be the East Region's #3 seed in the playoffs to be held at the end of the month. #3 seed will play second seeded Baptist Bible in the East Region Semi-Finals, while the loser, the #4 seed, will play top-seeded Philadelphia Biblical in the other East Region Semi-Final.

Wednesday's game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
