Chargers Race Out to Big Lead, Hold on for First Win of 2011-12 Season

The Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team learned that you can't get too comfortable, even when the scoreboard says it's OK to be comfortable. Leading 45-26 with 9:58 to play, the Chargers saw their lead shrink to 46-42 with 5:08 to play, to 47-46 with 2:09 to play and finally they saw it disappear all together when Gallaudet tied the game at 49-49 with 1:20 left.

Lauren Heliger's four free throws in the final minute bailed LBC out and the Chargers hung on to earn their first win of the season, 54-49. Emily Lloyd also added a free throw in the final minute for the Chargers who move to 1-1 in NEAC play and 1-2 overall.

Heliger led all scorers with 21 points and also added six steals and four rebounds. Lloyd was a force down low, scoring 11 points and grabbing 14 rebounds, while Sarah Heilenman chipped in with six points and nine rebounds.

"Heliger was great tonight and hit a lot of big shots," LBC Head Coach Doug Helsel said. "Her and Brooklyn Wilson both were big from beyond the arc."

Wilson had 10 points for LBC and was 3-of-5 from behind the 3-point line, Heliger was 3-of-4 as LBC had their highest offensive output of the young season.

"We didn't do too much differently," Helsel said of the offense. "The shots just fell for us tonight. We still turned the ball over too much, but I think the one thing we did do better was rebound the ball, especially on the offensive end. That got us a lot of second chance points."

While the offense is still working out the kinks, the Chargers' defense continues to perform well.

"We wanted to keep Gallaudet under their season shooting percentage average of 32% and we were able to do that, holding them to 29%," Helsel said. "I'm proud of the way the ladies played defensively tonight."

LBC returns to the floor on Wednesday when they face another NEAC opponent, Wilson, at 7:00 p.m. in Chambersburg. Hopefully they will have another comfortable lead in the second half, but not too comfortable.
