Seniors Help Chargers Down Lady Lions, 67-53

With the regular season winding down, the seniors on the Lancaster Bible College women's basketball team have just a few games left in the collegiate careers. It wasn't the greatest of victories, but when the Chargers' three seniors look back on the season, Thursday night's win against Penn State York will be one that stands out.

Lacy McClaine, Nicole Karschner and Vanessa Clemenson combined for 42 points and 18 rebounds to lead the Chargers past the Lady Lions, 67-53. McClaine led the Chargers with a game-high 21 points, including five 3-pointers. Karschner added 15 points and six assists, while Clemenson chipped in with six points and eight rebounds.

"Lacy was smart and effective for us tonight," Chargers' Head Coach Doug Helsel said. "She and the other seniors have done a great job recognizing the play and that has helped our other players."

One of those other players on Thursday was Emily Martz who had seven points and four rebounds off the bench for LBC.

"Martz provided a boost for us in the first half," Helsel said.

The first half proved to be difficult for the Chargers at times. LBC (10-12) led by five at halftime, but shot just 34 percent in the opening half. Meanwhile, the Lady Lions shot 44 percent and held a 5-3 advantage in 3-pointers made.

"We took good shots in the first half, they just didn't fall for us," Helsel said. "We were down 10 percent in shooting percentage, but up five points in the game, so we were doing something right."

The Chargers came out strong in the second half, holding the Lady Lions scoreless for the first 4:07 and increasing their lead to nine. After Penn State York cut the lead to 40-34, the Chargers went on a 9-2 run over the next five minutes to put the Lady Lions away for good.

Brooklyn Wilson continued her strong play with five rebounds, four assists and just one turnover. Lauren Heliger scored her 500th point as a member of the Chargers, and finished with 12 for the evening.

The Chargers shot 52 percent in the second half and held the Lady Lions to just 29 percent.

"We told the ladies at halftime that we thought they could hold Penn State to under 50 points," Helsel said. "I thought that was a little crazy, but it turns out, we were almost right."

The Chargers have the weekend off before returning to the floor on Monday night when they host Mount Aloysius at 6:00 p.m.

Notes:
-Thursday night was Karschner's 100th game as a member of the LBC basketball team. She joins Meredith Wrightson, Kelly Long and Kim Provenzano as the only women's basketball players to play in 100 games. Provenzano is the leader with 103 games played.

-McClaine's 21 points give her 990 for her career. She will look to become the sixth women's basketball player with 1,000 points on Monday night. Her teammate, Karschner, accomplished the feat earlier this week against Rosemont.

-The win gives LBC 10 wins for the first time since 2006-07 when they won 11. LBC has not won more than 11 since the 2004-05 season when they went 13-11.
