Bump in the Road

The college baseball season is an interesting one for a Northeastern located college. Such is the case for Lancaster Bible College. The season begins in February and you generally practice inside because it is either too cold or snowing. By March you head south for a few games and try to figure out what it is like to play outside and by early April the team has sprung into form and you are playing your best baseball.

Saturday at Charger Field was not anything like LBC's best baseball. The Chargers took advantage of six Williamson Trade errors to win game one, 6-4, but two of their own errors and some other misfortune netted them a 9-7 loss in game two.

"We have to play better baseball than that," Chargers' Head Coach T.J. Horn said. "We simply have to comeback and win on Tuesday."

Game one starter #Richard Westerlund# went six innings, scattering five hits and giving up two earned runs, while striking out five. #BJ Boosz and Kody Godsey# each had two hits for LBC, while Boosz and #Frank DiFilippo# each scored two runs.

Freshman #John Smith IV# earned his first collegiate save by working the seventh inning. He also had a hit and an RBI in the first game.

Game two started just like game one with the Mechanics taking a big lead in the first inning. Williamson Trade scored four runs to open game two after scoring three runs in the first inning of game one.

The Chargers responded with two runs of their own in the first, cutting the lead in half and then took the lead, 5-4 in the bottom of the second on a two-run home run by DiFilippo.

"I was looking fastball and got it," DiFilippo said. "I turned on it and it went out."

LBC starter #Patrick Hart# held the lead at 5-4 until the top of the fifth when the Mechanics' Mike Baselice homered to lead off the inning. After getting an out, Andrew Necastro doubled and that was the end of Hart's day.

#Dan Merson# came on and gave up a single to Brian Kildea who gave the Mechanics a 6-5 lead. Williamson Trade tacked on one more run to take a 7-5 lead after 4 1/2 innings.

After Godsey singled to lead off the fifth, he worked his way around the bases and finally scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 7-6. After a leadoff walk in the top of the sixth, Merson was pulled for DiFilippo. By groundouts and errors, the Mechanics plated another run to make it 8-6.

Smith doubled in the bottom of the sixth and Boosz added an RBI double a batter later to cut the lead to 8-7. DiFilippo singled which moved Boosz over to third with two outs. #Justin Long# came to the plate and a ball that appeared to hit the knob of his bat and then his chest was ruled in play and he was easily thrown out at first.

Horn argued to both umpires that the ball clearly hit his chest, but to no avail. Williamson Trade scored an insurance run in the top of the seventh to ice the game.

"It's a tough loss, but we have to let it go and practice hard on Monday," DiFilippo said.

The Chargers (8-9) host NCCAA East Region rival Philadelphia Biblical University on Tuesday at 12 p.m.
