Baseball is a sport where there can be little action in one inning and in the next there can be several things happening. Such was the case for Lancaster Bible College yesterday in their doubleheader with Philadelphia Biblical University.
Ahead 5-2 in the top of the fourth inning of game one, LBC unraveled, giving up 11 runs over the next two innings and eventually losing, 13-12 to the Crimson Eagles. Just to show how different each baseball game can be, the Chargers, led by
Justin Long won a pitcher's duel, 4-3 in game two, salvaging a split.
After scoring two runs in the bottom half of the second inning, the Chargers led 5-2 and breezed into the fourth, behind
Frank DiFilippo in game one. After a walk, single and hit-by-pitch, the Crimson Eagles loaded the bases with no one out. Four hits and an error later, PBU led 7-5. LBC tied the game at 7-7 thanks to a
Kody Godsey triple that scored DiFilippo and a double by
Rob Kumher.
It somehow got worse for the Chargers in the top of the fifth when PBU scored six more runs, this time on just two hits as LBC walked three hitters and committed two errors. Not to be outdone, LBC roared back once again in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five runs on three hits.
Down, 13-12 the Chargers managed just one more hit the rest of the way and lost to the Crimson Eagles for the first time in five games. DiFilippo, Godsey and
Patrick Hart each had two hits for LBC. DiFilippo had four RBI and scored three runs as well.
Game two was much different as PBU's Dean Diernbach and LBC' Long engaged in a pitching duel. LBC scored a run in each of the first three innings, but, down 3-2 in the fourth, PBU's
Chad Hollinger singled in Nicholas Schnittjer to tie the game at 3-3. Long gave up just one hit the rest of the way, as he scattered six hits over seven innings and struck out seven.
LBC threatened to take the lead in the sixth when PBU walked DiFilippo and Godsey to load the bases with two outs, but LBC's
Jarrod Bergey grounded out to end the threat.
After the Chargers'
Joel Butala reached on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the seventh,
Josh Chamberlin drew a walk to bring up
Sean Westerlund with two outs and runners on first and second. He singled, bringing around Butala from second to give LBC a 4-3 victory, snapping their two-game losing streak.
Westerlund finished the day with three hits, upping his average to .372. DiFilippo had three more hits, completing a 5-for-6 day at the dish over the two games. His average stands at .409.
Micah McClay also had three hits for LBC and he scored a run as well.
LBC (9-10) returns to the diamond on Thursday to take on Penn State Berks. Game one's first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
