Early Goal Holds Up as LBC Downs Penn St. Abington, 1-0

After not being able to get the equalizing goal on Tuesday against Goucher, the Lancaster Bible College men's soccer team scored early in Thursday's game and then did everything they could for the next 80 minutes to make sure it stayed 1-0.

Senior Travis Weyandt scored 10:48 into the game on a cross from Zach Kutz and the Chargers made it stand up as the game winner, defeating Penn St. Abington, 1-0 on Thursday at Charger Field.

"We played our best soccer at the start of the game," LBC Head Coach Tom Ardt said. "Our goal today was to play a full 90 minutes and we definitely did that."

The early scoring chances by LBC turned out to be some of their last as the Nittany Lions began to control play late in the first half. Penn St. Abington held a 9-7 edge in shots in the first half, but in the second half they dominated play, taking 10 shots to LBC's four and having many chances to even the score.

Chargers' goalkeeper Jarrod Bergey held the fort though, making 10 saves for the game.

"Bergey faced a lot of shots today, especially in the second," Ardt said. "He played well and was steady back there for us."

Ardt was not only happy with Bergey, but the entire team's defensive effort.

"We played very well defensively as a team and showed a lot of mental toughness today," Ardt said. "The guys were tired, but they finished the job."

Unfortunately for the Chargers, they don't have much time to rest as they take on arch rival Philadelphia Biblical University on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. for a Homecoming showdown.

"We've got to get some rest and be ready to play another full 90 minutes," Ardt said. "It's obviously a big game for us and I know the guys will be ready."

LBC [2-3-1. 2-1-1] has lost three of its last four against the Crimson Eagles, including last year's NCCAA East Region Final where PBU won, 5-4 in penalty kicks.

Notes:
-The goal by Weyandt was his first since Oct. 19, 2009 when he scored in a 3-0 win over Patrick Henry.

-The shutout by Bergey was his second of the season and his fifth all-time as a member of the Chargers' soccer program.
